  • Contractual nursing services are considered to be “portal to portal”, meaning the nurse will meet their student at their home bus stop at the beginning of the day, and accompany the student throughout the day, including the ride to and from the school location via school bus. The services will continue at the school location and will remain in effect until the student arrives back at their home bus stop. Nurses are expected to continue providing care at school-sponsored events, including but not limited to field trips and school activities, in collaboration with the parent/guardian and school nurse. 
  • The contracted nurse will function in accordance with the Standards of Practice as delineated in the Maryland Nurse Practice Act; Health Occupations Article, Title 8-701; Annotated code of Maryland, Health Occupations Article, Title 8, when caring for students.  
  • The contractual nurse must become thoroughly familiar with the implementation of student’s transportation procedures, emergency protocols, and emergency evacuation procedures and be prepared to carry out these procedures. The contracted nurse is responsible for providing care for the student during the evacuation. 
  • The contractual nurse must present a current copy of his/her current Maryland nursing license and CPR card to the principal or school nurse. 
  • Notify the school nurse of any illness or emergencies that arise during the school day. The contracted nurse will continue to care for the student while the student is at the school, at a school sponsored event, on a school bus, or being transported by ambulance. 
  • Duties and activities that may be required of contractual nurses, include, but are not limited to: ventilator care, tracheostomy care and suctioning, gastrostomy or jejunostomy care/feeding, medication administration, ostomy care, toileting/diapering and oral feeding. 
  • Report concerns regarding equipment and supplies to the parent/guardian and to appropriate HCPS staff. 
  • Participate in academic programming, therapeutic regimens, and other school activities at the discretion of the principal/designee. 
  • Report to the principal/designee if he/she must leave his/her assignment during the course of the school day. Contracted nurses do not have a duty-free lunch break. Plans may be made with the school nurse for short breaks as the school nurses’ schedule allows. 
  • Review the guidelines, the nursing assessment, emergency protocols and discuss questions and concerns with the school nurse, principal/designee. 
  • Participate in routine school conferences regarding the student, at the discretion of Harford County Public Schools administrators and appropriate staff. 
  • Review and comply with the HCPS Contractual Nurse Expectations Agreement.
  • Ensure that school related information obtained while attending to the student in the school setting remains confidential and complies with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) 
Compensation: $5,600.00 - $7,200.00 per month
